9: Age structure and population momentum (abbreviated example) |

In
this projection experiment we use three hypothetical populations with
rather different age structure, but the same number of people* (see
figures below). For the projection we assume identical fertility and
mortality rates and zero migration (closed population). The populations
are projected for a 100 year period (see figures next page). The
experiment should help students to understand the relationship between the
age structure of a population and their momentum. |

Please don't get confused by the visual impression: all three populations have identical population size - they just look different because
each figure has its own scale. In the software you can easily switch
between shared and individual scales. |
