Note: While not exhaustive, this map shows three of China’s major ongoing territorial disputes - based on claims along its shared border with India and Bhutan, the South China Sea, and with Japan in the East China Sea.

In 1960, a short war over a contested border with the former Soviet Union could have lead to a nuclear conflict. There were also severe border disputes between China and India in 1962 and China and Vietnam in 1979 that triggered military conflicts. While China has settled several territorial disputes with its neighbors since the late 1990s, several border disputes continue over exclusive economic zones (EEZs) and ownership of potentially rich, off-shore oil and gas deposits in the South China Sea.
