The 15 Largest Cities of China in 2010: City Population in 1985, 2010 and 2025

With almost 17 million inhabitants, Shanghai is China's largest city in 2010. According to the most recent projections of the United Nations Population Division, it will increase to about 20 million in 2025. Shanghai is China's financial and commercial center.

Beijing, the political and administrative center, has about 12 million inhabitants and will only grow moderately to 15 million by 2015.
Chongqing, which should become the economic growth engine in the center of China, fueled by energy from the Three Gorges Dam, is the country's third largest urban agglomeration with over 9 million inhabitants in 2010. Chinagqing is expected to grow to over 11 million by 2025.
The most phenomenal increase in urban population is reported from Shenzhen, which was a medium sized town in 1985 with about 200,000 population. Today, Shenzhen has a population of about 9 million people. By 2025, the electronics and computer capital of China, will increase to about 11 million inhabitants - the forth largest in urban agglomeration in China.
