2000-2003
The Three Gorges Dam project requires the resettlement of more than 1.3 million people over a period of 17 years. In 2000, the government started long-distance resettlement schemes, to replace the previous policy of moving migrants to uphill sites. In 2000, 2001 and 2002 more than 70 thousand people were moved out of the Three Gorges Area.
