Tibetan population revolts against Chinese occupation is suppressed with "iron fist".

 

1959, March

 

According to estimates of western scholars, about 2,000 people die during the three days of fighting between the Tibetans and the Chinese army. The 14th Dalai Lama, spiritual leader of Tibet, escapes to India. Some 80,000 Tibetans flee to Nepal, India, Bhutan and Europe.
