Frequently Asked Questions
| I am not a computer expert - is it difficult to setup the
software? |
Not
at all - everyone can do it!
To setup the Demo-Graphics & Tables software you have to type one
phrase ("D:setup") and just click your "mouse" a few times on an OK or
Next-button. That's it. Everything else is automatic. |

| Which hard- and system-software do I need to run
DemoGraphics '96? |
You need a Personal Computer that runs MS-Windows '95 or NT
4.0.
In principle, you can use the DemoGraphics '96 software on any computer, that can
run MS-Windows '95 or NT 4.0. However, for adequate performance you would want a Pentium
or Pentium II PC with at least 90 MHz and 16 MB RAM (32 MB for NT). Your computer's video
board (and your monitor) should be capable of a screen resolution of at least 800x600
pixels in 256 colors. However, you need a true-color video board (which can display more
than 16 Million colors) to see the fine color shadings in the animated maps. |
| |
| Which hardware and system software do I need to run
DemoTables '96? |
The same as for DemoGraphics '96. (see above) |
| |
| How
much space do I need on my hard drive? |
10 MB for each
package (20 MB for both).
For a complete installation of the DemoGraphics '96 and DemoTables '96
software you need 20 MB of free hard disk space. However, please make sure that these are
not the last 20 MB of free space on your hard disk! Your other
programs and the MS-Windows operating system itself might need additional hard disk space
while running. |
| |
| Can
I run the software on my laptop? |
Yes.
If you have a working installation of MS-Windows '95 or NT on your laptop
you can also run the DemoGraphics '96 and DemoTables '96 software. Even if your laptop
only has a screen resolution of 640x480 in 16 colors the software should run. However,
with such a low resolution and color-depth you will not be able to see the fine color
variation in the animated maps of the DemoGraphics '96 package. Some very small text fonts
will also not be readable. |
| |
| How should I setup my laptop for a presentation of
DemoGraphics or DemoTables '96? |
If you use your laptop for giving a presentation to a larger
audience, make sure that you use the highest possible resolution and color depth. Usually,
laptops can be connected to an external monitor (or projector) at higher
screen resolution than on the internal screen. This can significantly improve the display
of charts, maps and tables for a larger audience. |
| |
| Can
I input my own data? |
No.
Unfortunately, we have not got permission to open-up the DemoGraphics or
DemoTables data files for public use. For copyright reasons all data from the United
Nations Population Division had to be included in a special encrypted format. However, you
can use all data within the program in the form of charts, maps, and tables - which you
also can print out. |
| |
| Can
I export the data in plain ASCII format? |
No.
Again, we have only permission to use the data from the United Nations
Population Division, if we do not make it directly available in ASCII format to the users
of the DemoGraphics '96 and DemoTables '96 software. |
| |
| Why
is DemoTables '96 a separate package? |
| DemoTables '96 is a
software package that was designed to complement the DemoGraphics '96 package.
DemoTables '96 is a data browser, which gives you easy access to demographic data from the
1996 United Nations World Population Assessments and Projections. The data are displayed
in "smart tables" that can be easily filtered for specific
regions and sorted with one click of the mouse. While the DemoGraphics '96 package was
speed-optimized for graphical animation (and was written in C++), DemoTables '96 was
optimized for easy data browsing (and was written in Delphi 3.0). |
| |
| Can
I get a combined package of DemoGraphics '96 and DemoTables '96? |
Yes.
We have a special reduced price for those who order both software
packages. Please check out our Order Forms. |
| |
| I
cannot find the tables with countries in DemoTables '96 - what is wrong? |
Nothing!
Just click on the "Select Area" button (it is at the left-top corner of
each table). Keep on clicking: the button steps through a loop. You will see many
different types of tables. |
